How to use a Laptop as a Monitor
A user may need to set up a laptop as a monitor for various reasons like projecting the screen of the desktop computer on the laptop and using it as an extra monitor. Doing so allows people to manage the workload and observe the workflow using two monitors. So, let’s see how you can use a laptop as an extra desktop screen.
Normally, you’d need cables like Displayport or HDMI to create a connection between the two gadgets; however, you don’t always need the cables or wires to run a laptop as a monitor. The wifi is enough to enable you to connect both devices wirelessly using the Miracast.
1- The laptop and desktop computer with the Windows OS:
You may go to the laptop first and follow our instructions.
- Go to the “System” from the settings. Choose the “Projecting to this PC” option.
- You may select the “Available everywhere on secure networks” option beneath the “Some Windows and Android devices can project to this PC when you allow them to.”
You’ll be able to mirror the screen of your desktop on the laptop. Use the other options like the pin code or allowing access every time the request is made to strengthen the security of the connection. The pin code will secure the pairing process of both devices. The last step includes running the connect app on the laptop after which you can move to the desktop.
- Go to settings > system > Display > Multiple displays > Connect.
- Select your laptop when the list opens to make the connection successful.
You may customize the rest of the settings in the Display section. Whether you want to mirror the two screens or extend support for the desktop by using the laptop as an extra screen or use other options, it’s up to you.
2- Use TeamViewer for any operating system:
TeamViewer software is a quick and easy solution for operating your laptop as a monitor and it works on all operating systems. You can use its screen-sharing feature to project the desktop screen onto the laptop. You may download the software from its official website and install it on both your PC and laptop. You will get an ID and password on both devices. The best thing about using TeamViewer is that you can either control the laptop from the desktop or vice-versa or simply mirror screens using the screen-sharing feature.
Once you open the TeamViewer, you may use the ID and password that appears on the laptop to enter it on your desktop. This way you can project the desktop screen onto the laptop and use it as a monitor. Likewise, you can enter the ID and password shown on the desktop into the laptop to operate it from the laptop.
